High Waist Shorts - DIY

I mentioned earlier in August that I stumbled across a pair of potential DIY high waist shorts when I was at the Thrift Town in the Mission District in SF. I finally got around to making these shorts the other day, and I absolutely love them! The shorts (originally pants) have a lovely charcoal blue color; I'm really looking forward to paring them with tights and a chunky knit sweater for the Fall.

DIY: When searching for high waist pants that can be made into shorts, one thing that is really important is to find high waist pants that do not hug the thighs, but flare out at the thigh area (so stretch high waist denim is not recommended, unless you want the booty hugging effect).

Steps to making your own high waist shorts (cuffed)
Materials: high waist pants, fabric pen, scissors

1. Use an existing pair of high waist shorts, and trace the slant of those high waist shorts onto the pants about 1.5 to 2 inches longer than the shorts. Be sure to trace the front and back separately!

If you do not have an existing pair to reference, put the pants on and measure how short you would like your shorts by making a mark on the outer thigh and inner thigh area in the front and back, then tracing the slant 1.5 to 2 inches longer than the mark.

2. Cut along the lines.

3. Try it on and cuff them and see if you're comfortable with the length.

4. Throw in the wash and you will get those lovely slightly frayed ends.

DIY studding and damaging coming soon!
